Bedroom design ideas 2026: colours, lighting, headboards and storage
A 2026 bedroom is warm and calm: wood and earthy colours instead of all-white minimalism, textured materials, soft 2700–3000 K light and a wardrobe that hides everything away. In a small bedroom, where the bed goes and whether there is a floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobe matter more than decor. A bedroom is for rest, so every decision should make it quieter, not more impressive.

Bedroom design trends for 2026
In its 2026 trends overview, Houzz names warm wood and earthy colours for every room, and lists check textiles, textured walls and statement lighting among the year's trends. Designers Dezeen spoke to talk about calm over showy luxury and about interiors you want to live in rather than ones that impress.
Statement headboards, built-in wardrobes and a cocooning feel are a general direction that magazines and blogs mention, without firm data behind it. Treat them as sensible choices rather than compulsory fashion for the year.
| Trend | How to use it in a bedroom | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Warm wood and earthy colours | walnut, oak or cherry for the bed and bedside tables, walls in warm tones | too much of one wood tone makes the room monotonous |
| Textured walls | plaster or limewash behind the bed | texture shows in side light, so you need wall lamps |
| Check textiles | a throw, cushions or curtains in a check | one pattern is enough, keep the rest plain |
| Statement lighting | one sculptural lamp or pendant as the accent | the light should be warm and dimmable |
| Upholstered headboard (general direction) | a padded headboard the full width of the bed, or taller than usual | choose a fabric that is easy to clean |
| Built-in wardrobes (general direction) | a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe along a whole wall | hinged doors need clear space to open |
What colour to paint a bedroom
An all-white bedroom often looks cold and greyish in a Riga winter. Houzz names earthy colours instead of white as a 2026 direction: terracotta, sage, olive, muted blue. It calls green the new neutral, and in a bedroom it is one of the calmest shades.
Among the colours of the year, Sherwin-Williams Universal Khaki works as a background and Benjamin Moore Silhouette, a deep espresso brown, suits the wall behind the bed. A dark wall behind the headboard makes the room feel more enclosed and cosy, provided the other walls stay lighter.
In a north-facing room, choose colours with a warm undertone. Cool greys turn gloomy in that light, and the bedroom loses exactly what it needs most: warmth.
The headboard as the centre of the bedroom
The bed is the largest piece in the room, so the headboard sets its character straight away. An upholstered headboard adds warmth and makes it comfortable to sit up in bed with a book.
The photo shows a bedroom with an upholstered headboard and a floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobe. If the headboard makes a statement, keep the rest of the furniture quiet so the room does not feel crowded.
If the flat is in a block with poor sound insulation, such as the 119 series, an upholstered headboard against the shared wall, heavy curtains and a rug partly absorb sound and make the room quieter.
Bedroom lighting: 2700–3000 K in several layers
Warm white light at 2700–3000 K suits a bedroom. Cooler light feels like an office in the evening and makes it harder to wind down. Lighting overviews for 2026 recommend layered light (general, task and accent) plus adjustable colour temperature.
In practice a bedroom needs these light points:
- a dimmable ceiling light for general lighting;
- reading lamps or wall lights on both sides of the bed, each with its own switch;
- a low night light, so you can get up without waking your partner;
- a light inside the wardrobe, so clothes are visible on a dark winter morning;
- a switch by the bed, so you can turn off the main light without getting up.
Storage: a floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobe
A built-in wardrobe that runs to the ceiling uses the full height of the wall, and no dust gathers on top. Keep seasonal things on the upper shelves and everyday clothes at eye and hand level.
The photo shows a white floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobe with black handles. When the doors match the walls, the wardrobe blends into the wall and the room looks bigger.
In a narrow bedroom, sliding doors save space because they need no room to swing open. Plan the interior (rails, drawers, shelves) together with the wardrobe rather than afterwards.
Small bedroom design: making every centimetre count
Many panel blocks have low ceilings, so in a small bedroom every extra object is felt even more. Fix the position of the bed and the walkways first, and only then choose furniture.
- Place the bed so there is a comfortable walkway on at least one side.
- Choose a bed with drawers or a lift-up base to store bedding underneath.
- Use wall-mounted shelves or wall lamps instead of bedside tables to keep the floor clear.
- Take the wardrobe up to the ceiling and paint it the wall colour.
- Pick one warm tone for the walls and leave the accent to the headboard or textiles.
- Hang a mirror opposite the window or on the wardrobe doors to bring in more light.
Common bedroom design mistakes
What usually fails is everyday use rather than style. These mistakes turn up in many flats:
- A single central ceiling light with a cool colour temperature.
- A wardrobe whose doors cannot open fully because of the bed.
- Sockets and switches nowhere near the bed.
- A TV or desk that turns the bedroom into a second office.
- Too many decorative cushions and small objects that get in the way every day.
Designing a bedroom with Valerija Gelfere
Since 2020 Valerija Gelfere has finished more than 10 design projects. In a bedroom she starts with the 2D plan: where the bed and wardrobe go and how you reach them. The 3D then shows the room from all angles. From the 10 €/m² package, the shopping list gives the bed, curtains and lamps with prices and shop addresses.
Bedroom design costs from 5 €/m². She does not carry out renovations, but she will recommend a painter and an electrician she has worked with.
Frequently asked questions
What bedroom design is in style in 2026?
A warm, calm bedroom: wood, earthy colours and green instead of white minimalism, textured walls, check textiles and statement lighting. Magazines also mention upholstered headboards and floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobes as a general direction, without firm data.
What colour should I paint my bedroom?
Warm neutrals and earthy tones suit a bedroom: khaki, beige, sage, olive, muted blue. Keep a dark shade, such as a deep brown, for the wall behind the bed.
What lighting does a bedroom need?
Warm white light at 2700–3000 K and several sources: dimmable general light, lamps by the bed and a low night light. A single cool ceiling light is not enough for a bedroom.
How do I lay out a small bedroom?
Decide where the bed goes and where the walkways are first. Then choose a bed with storage, a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe in the wall colour and wall-mounted shelves instead of bedside tables.
Is a built-in or freestanding wardrobe better for a bedroom?
A floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobe uses the full height of the wall and collects no dust on top. With doors in the wall colour it almost disappears, and the room looks larger.
Can a bedroom be painted a dark colour?
Yes, if the room has warm, layered lighting. The dark colour usually goes on the wall behind the bed, with the other walls kept lighter so the room does not feel heavy.
How can I make a bedroom quieter in a panel block?
An upholstered headboard against the shared wall, heavy curtains and a rug help to some extent. They do not replace sound insulation, but in blocks where it is poor the bedroom does become quieter.
Who can design a bedroom in Riga?
Interior designer Valerija Gelfere designs bedrooms and whole flats, with 3D included in every package. She has worked in Riga since 2020, in Latvian, Russian and English.
